Welcome New Members!

We’re glad you’re here!  The best way to get started is by getting familiar with what AFA is, how your union works, and your AFA representatives and elected leaders.

As a new AFA Member, here are some ways that you can become familiar and engaged with your union:

The New Hire Committee is a resource for you to ask questions and share ideas to make the transition into the industry smoother as you begin your new career at Spirit Airlines. 

  • Assist with reserve contract interpretation.
  • Educate reserve flight attendants as to contract provisions applicable to reserve flight attendant status. 
  • Assist new hires in the bidding process and how to manage their schedule. 
  • Monitor New Hires concerns on a local basis.
  • Coordinate training for new mentors.
  • Responsible for assigning new FA’s to a mentor.
  • Keep track of when mentors are available. As some mentors may not be available 24/7/365
  • Submitting monthly report of activities to LECP and MEC New Hire Chair

The New Hire Committee is available to help you with:

  • New Hires that may need help with contract interpretations, scheduling, and adjusting to the airline industry. 
  • Direction on situations that may arise while working. 
  • Information on different committees and who you should contact to assist you in specific situations.

New Hire Committee

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Qualifications include:

  • It is recommended that the committee be comprised of Flight Attendants off probation and in good standing with AFA-CWA and the Company. 
  • Interested in helping New Hire Flight Attendants after they graduate. 
  • Willingness to do ongoing committee work on a volunteer basis.

Purpose and Scope

The committee’s primary responsibility is the protection of all New Hire Flight Attendants against contract violations. and providing guidance to New Hires while on probation. 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with reserve contract interpretation.
  • Educate reserve flight attendants as to contract provisions applicable to reserve flight attendant status. 
  • Assist new hires in the bidding process and how to manage their schedule. 
  • Monitor New Hires concerns on a local basis.

Communication

  • Act as liaison between the membership and the Local Executive Council (LEC) Officers.
  • The Local Chairperson will act as liaison between the Local Committee and the MEC Committee Chairperson. 
  • Coordinate with the Local Chairperson of the committee regarding all activities
  • Collaborate with other AFA committees as needed
  • Report to the LEC Officers on any discussion with management
  • Any AFA committee appointed by the LEC and empowered to conduct discussions with management on behalf of the flight attendants must first meet with the LEC Officers prior to forming any agreement to gain the direction of the LEC
  • The committee will not make any policy that conflicts with LEC, MEC, or AFA policy

How to make the best of your AFA-CWA Union

These two committees can help and support you as you begin your new career.
Know who your New Hire Mentor. Make sure you have his/her contact information saved and accessible. Contact our Reserve Committee should you need further assistance. 

Our contract is your Spirit bible. Learn it. Know it. Never hesitate to ask questions or call your Reserve Committee Members or LEC Officers if you need clarification on any issue.

Once you’ve completed your probationary period, we encourage you to get involved.  AFA is your union!  
Opportunities to get involved include:

  • Attending Local Council Meetings and other AFA events
  • Volunteering to serve on an AFA Committee
  • Running for an elected AFA office
