The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) is the world’s largest labor union organized by flight attendants for flight attendants.  AFA represents nearly 50,000 flight attendants at 20 airlines, serving as a voice for flight attendants at their workplace, in the industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill.  Simply put, the goal of flight attendants who become part of AFA-CWA is to negotiate better pay, benefits, working conditions and work rules at their airline, and to improve their safety on the job.

In order for AFA-CWA to maintain our influence in the legislative arena, it is essential to support political programs which complement our legislative activity.  FlightPAC,  part of CWA’s Political Action Fund (PAF), was established in 1982. Dues from our members are never contributed to campaigns. Violations of campaign finance laws can result in civil penalties.  Therefore, it is important for AFA-CWA leaders and Government Affairs Committee members to understand and observe the laws and rules which govern PAC’s and political activity.  

FlightPAC/PAF Contributions are Voluntary. FlightPAC/PAF provides financial support to federal candidates in office who are committed to helping us accomplish our goals.  

FlightPAC/PAF is non-partisan.  We give to candidates who help flight attendants. AFA understands that not all of our members have the same political/social beliefs. The fact remains that there are issues that affect all members. These include 10 hours rest, human trafficking awareness, the right to collective bargaining, air quality and a host of other workplace related issues. 

FlightPAC/PAF is the best way to make your voice heard in Washington. It is the most important tool that AFA has to help elect Senators and Representatives who understand and defend the issues important to flight attendants.

Flight Attendant Wellness App for iPhone and Android

The Flight Attendant Wellness App is a tool for all active flight attendants to use to address occupational issues, including insomnia, post-incident trauma, and work related stress. Interactive tools include mindfulness activities, information on coping with trauma and stress, relaxation exercises, screeners for sleep issues and substance use, sleep quality tips, and a blood alcohol calculator. No information entered in the app is saved or reported to anyone.

The Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program (FADAP) provided subject matter expertise to the app’s development. The app application platform as well as the non-flight attendant specific content is scientifically-based and largely derived from the Personal Health Intervention Toolkit, which was originally developed for the Department of Defense for soldiers returning from active duty deployment. The flight attendant specific information includes a flight attendant occupation specific substance abuse screener, which includes prescription drug misuse.

Skip the line at the airport when entering the USA with MOBILE PASSPORT! This app effectively replaces the traditional blue-and-white paper declaration form required of all travelers entering the U.S. by air.

Known Crewmember- It’s a Privilege, Not a Right!

Known Crewmember® is a risk-based screening system that enables TSA security officers to positively verify the identity and employment status of flight-crew members. The program expedites flight-crew member access to sterile areas of airports, reduces passenger-screening line congestion, enhances security, and makes airport checkpoint screening more efficient for all who depend on air transportation. NATA worked in close partnership with Airlines for America (A4A), the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the TSA and NATA Compliance Services to bring this valuable program to our industry. 

Changes to Known Crewmember® are mandated from time-to-time from theTransportation Security Administration (TSA). The most recent mandated change was for international travel. It had nothing to do with Spirit. However, it was the result of several well-publicized incidents involving smuggling of contraband (narcotics or currency) and crewmembers. Spirit does pay a small monthly per person fee that has nothing to do with the possibility of us losing our KCMPrivileges. The possible loss of KCM has everything to do with the fact that several of our brethren have gotten in trouble for violating the rules of KCM despite repeated read files from the company on the subject.  

The rules are very simple and straightforward. There should be NO REASON for violations to occur.Crewmembers can utilize the KCM access points for both business and personal use (except when traveling internationally for personal travel – see bullet points below).  TSA OfficersDO NOT make a determination as to whether a crewmember is on active duty for a flight, traveling for business, or traveling for personal reasons. TSA Officers should not ask crewmembers their reason for using KCM. Crewmembers must have the required identification to use KCM.

  • Crewmembers may NOT enter the sterile area through the KCM checkpointwhen on personal international travel.
  • Crewmembers on personal international travel MUST enter the sterile area through a passenger screening checkpoint. 
  • Crewmembers are permitted to bring personal property through the KCM access points as long as it is not on the TSA’s Prohibited Items List (PIL)
  • Crewmembers are permitted to bring only their personal carry-on items through a KCM access point.  They cannot bring carry-on items that DO NOT belong to them when entering an airport sterile area via a KCM access point. This includes property which belongs to their spouses, partners, children, co-workers, etc. 
  • Pets are NOT allowed through the KCM access point with the crewmember.  Crewmembers with pets will be directed to the passenger screening checkpoint and screened in accordance with TSA screening procedures.

Failure to comply with these restrictions may result in loss of KCM® privileges for that crewmember (or in our case the entire airline)! 

KCM Frequently Asked Questions can be easily found online at www.knowncrewmember.org/. Here are a few to keep in mind.

Q. What should I expect when using a KCM® access point?

A. Expect to enter the sterile area of an airport via an alternative access point, which may be separate from the passenger security- screening lanes. You will be met by a TSA Security Officer (TSO) who will ask for both your company identification and a TSA-accepted, non-expired, government-issued photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s license. The TSO (i.e., screener) will match the identification to your appearance and confirm your identity and current employment status via the KCM® system. Once these tasks are successfully completed, you will be allowed to proceed into the sterile area, with no other screening or inspection of your person or accessible property. It is possible, however, that you and your accessible property items may be selected for random screening. Random screening is built in as a check and balance to ensure the integrity of the KCM® system.

 
Q. Uniformed crewmembers are allowed exemptions by the TSA when they are screened at the passenger screening checkpoint. With the change of the uniform requirement, how does this impact the exemptions at the KCM® access point and at the passenger screening checkpoint?

A. Effective January 13, 2015, crewmembers are no longer required to wear uniforms when utilizing the KCM® access points at airports nationwide. Uniformed crewmembers are allowed exemptions by the TSA when they are screened at KCM® access points and passenger screening checkpoints. Notice: When approaching a KCM® access point, non-uniformed crewmembers should wear their airline ID visible on their outer most garment above their waist. This will assist the Transportation Security Officer (TSO) in identifying you as a crewmember approaching the KCM® podium and not a passenger attempting to breach the sterile area of the airport. With the change of the uniform requirement, these exemptions at the KCM® access point and at the passenger screening checkpoint will be permitted in accordance with the following:

Q. What do I do if my KCM® barcode card is lost or stolen?

A. Request a new KCM® barcode card from your airline management. Once you receive your new KCM® barcode card, login to your secure account at www.mykcmsupport.com. Update your new KCM® barcode card number in your account.

Q. Does KCM® mean that I will never be screened in the traditional checkpoint fashion when passing through a KCM access point?

A. NO. Crewmembers may be directed to passenger-screening lines as part of a random screening-selection process, or whenever the KCM® access point is not operational. Should the KCM® access point become inoperative, TSA security officers will direct crewmembers to the passenger-screening checkpoints.

Q. What should I do if I am selected for random screening at a KCM® access point?

A. Cooperate fully and without delay, follow the instruction provided by the TSO. You may be directed to screening at the KCM® access point or referred back to the passenger screening checkpoint.  Do not attempt to access another KCM access point at that airport. Failure to follow the instruction provided by the TSO may result in action by the TSA, which may include a loss of KCM® privileges for that crewmember. Random screening is a normal TSA screening policy. It is incorporated for your protection and to ensure the integrity of the system.  (Note: The TSA may vary the percentage of random selection based upon their operational need.)

                                Easy right? Simple. Follow the rules! 

Q. I am traveling for pleasure and I have a SSSS on my boarding pass or seat request card,  what do I do?

A. Airline employees traveling for pleasure are subject to the TSA Secure Flight (SF) vetting system the same as passengers.  The SF system randomly selects individual to undergo selectee screening and will identify the printed boarding pass or seat request card with a SSSS.  It is suggested that you print your pass prior to entering the sterile area.  If your pass has a SSSS printed on it, you must undergo selectee screening at the passenger screening checkpoint.  Do not go through KCM.  Once you arrive at the boarding gate and your pass has not been properly marked by the TSA , you will be sent back to the passenger screening checkpoint for proper screening.

Q. Does using KCM® preclude any chance that I may be selected for additional screening after I successfully transit an access point and proceed into the sterile area of an airport?

A. NO. All air carrier employees are subject to TSA screening practices conducted within sterile areas, which include roving screening teams, random gate screening, and questioning by Behavioral Detection Officers (BDOs). KCM® does not exempt a crewmember from complying with these additional screening techniques.

Q. Will my carry-on items be inspected when I proceed through a KCM® access point?

A. NO unless you are selected for random passenger-style screening, in which case, both you and your carry-on items will be screened via traditional checkpoint screening protocols.

Q. Am I permitted to escort anyone with me through a KCM® access point?

A. NO. Only authorized crewmembers approved by the KCM® system are allowed to enter into the airport sterile area through a KCM® access point.  All other individuals (to include spouses, dependents, minor children, etc….) must be screened at the passenger screening checkpoint. 

Q. Does KCM® change any other TSA regulations regarding when and what types of items I may carry onboard an aircraft?

A. NO. You are subject to all existing crewmember regulations regarding the types of items that may be carried onboard an aircraft. KCM® does not provide any other exemptions or privileges regarding the items that you carry, other than those already articulated in TSA regulations.

                Remember, if you have to ask yourself if it’s ok… it’s probably not!

Passport Name Change – How to Change Name on U.S. Passport?

Did you just get married or perhaps you have been divorced? Requesting a passport name change from and State Department is a simple process. To do a passport name change, you need to have several documents in place before applying.

A passport name change is required when newly married women take their husband’s last name. Additionally, divorced women sometimes plan to go back to using their maiden name. Other life circumstances may also warrant a name change, but these are the two primary reasons why someone would need to change the name on their passport. From time to time printing errors occur on the passport, and would need to be corrected using a passport name change. If your name was changed voluntarily or by court order, you must follow the below directions.
Regular processing takes 4 to 6 week if you need it an emergency we recommend Fastport Passport. They are able to obtain your passport in as little as ONE business day.

Required Documents

  •  DS-5504 Application Form for Passport Name Change
  • Current Valid Passport:  If you have an existing passport, you will need to submit it along with the other documents required for a name change.
  • Passport Photo: The U.S. State Department requires anyone applying for a replacement passport to provide a “2X2” photo, in color, that was taken no more than six months ago.
  • Proof of Name Change: Evidence of Passport Name Change such as marriage certificate, divorce certificate, or another court document will suffice as proof of legal name change.
  • Passport Fee: In order to process your application for a name change.
    • Note: there is no fee for a name change if you obtained your passport within the last 12 months. If you are requesting expedited service you will have to pay the expedited service fee.

There are two ways to replace an airmen certificate.

  • Allow 4 to 6 weeks for mail processing and 7 to 10 days for online processing
  • We can only issue one copy of each certificate
  • We can’t place the original date of issue on a replacement certificate
  • We can’t issue expired certificates. However, you can request an expired CFI letter at no charge.
  • If your current address is listed as a Post Office Box (P.O. Box), General Delivery, Rural Route, or Star Route, please provide directions or a map for locating your residence.

If your airman certificate or special purpose pilot authorization was or will be issued on the basis of on a foreign license you must first apply for a verification of the authenticity of your foreign license. Your foreign license must first be verified with the CAA prior to making application with the IFO or FSDO to replace your paper pilot certificate or to apply for an airman certificate or rating.

The Union Plus Scholarship Program

Since 1991, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $4.2 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their post-secondary education.

Over 2,800 families have benefited from our commitment to higher education. The Union Plus Scholarship Program is offered through the Union Plus Education Foundation, supported in part by contributions from the provider of the Union Plus Credit Card. (You do not need to be a Union Plus Credit Card holder to apply for this scholarship.) 

The Facts 

Eligibility

Current and retired members of participating unions, their spouses and their dependent children (as defined by IRS regulations). At least one year of continuous union membership by the applicant, applicant’s spouse or parent (if applicant is a dependent). The one year membership minimum must be satisfied.

Evaluation Criteria

This is a competitive scholarship. Applicants are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended. The required essays can account for up to half your total score. Scholarship applicants are judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators

 

Scholarship Award Amounts

Amounts range from $500 to $4,000. These one-time cash awards are for study beginning in the Fall of 2019. Students may re-apply each year.

AFA Disaster Relief Fund

Flight Attendants helping Flight Attendants. The Disaster Relief Fund provides a means for AFA members to assist other members and retirees who have suffered significant damage and/or relocation as a result of a disaster.

Flight Attendant Drug & Alcohol Program

The Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program (FADAP). Union Plus Offers Help to Those Impacted by Hurricane Michael

If you are a union member who participates in certain Union Plus programs and have been affected by Hurricane Michael, you may be eligible for financial assistance through the Union Plus Disaster Relief Grant program.1
Union Plus Disaster Relief Grants of $500 are available to eligible participants of one of the following programs:

To qualify for a Union Plus Disaster Relief Grant:

  1. Your residence must be in a county qualifying for individual assistance money from FEMA. To check if your county has been designated as an area eligible for individual assistance, visit FEMA’s disaster declarations page.

  2. You must have had a Union Plus Credit Card for at least three months, Union Plus Personal Loan for at least six months, Union Plus Mortgage, Union Plus Retiree Health Insurance, Union Plus Life or Accidental Death Insurance or Union Plus Auto Insurance for at least 12 months with that account or policy in good standing (be up-to-date on payments).

If you participate in the Union Plus Credit Card Program and want to apply for a disaster relief grant, call 1-800-622-2580.

If you participate in any other of the designated programs and want to apply for a disaster relief grant, call 1-800-472-2005.

The Union Plus Disaster Relief Fund has provided nearly $1 million in assistance to union members facing hardships following Hurricane Florence, the California wildfires, floods and other natural disasters.
