Commuting Resources

What Is Commuting?!

commute:

(verb) travel some distance between one's home and place of work on a regular basis.

"she commuted from Portland to Las Vegas."

To be a commuting flight attendant means that you do not live in the city in which you are based.

At one point or another you either checked “yes” on the job application or verbally stated “yes” in your face-to-face interview when presented with the “are you willing to relocate” question. You are not obligated to move to your base or does it mean that you are relocating to one place for forever. As a commuter, you will kind of have a “double life” in terms of you will be living out of a suitcase, sleeping in hotels, and sometimes staying in crash pads.

Commuting FAQs

  • Can I Commute As a New Hire?

Yes! Initially, you will most likely be a reserve flight attendant so it will be a little more difficult because you only know the days you are on reserve in advance and not necessarily the trip you may be working.

Familiarize yourself with Section 25 of the current contract regarding Spirit Airlines’ Commuter Policy. Probationary Flight Attendants are NOT covered under the commuter policy.

  • Can I Commute as a Reserve Flight Attendant?

Yes. However, as a reserve Flight Attendant you need to be in base for your reserve period/days. So commuting each day could be difficult and you never know when scheduling will call with a trip assignment. It is recommended you get a crash pad while you are on reserve.

  • What Does It Mean To Commute?

Flight Attendants start and end a trip at their base, not just any airport that they want. Commuting as a Flight Attendant means you usually fly to work, however, it can include various and multiple modes of transportation.

  • Where Do I Stay as a Commuter?

When you’re a commuter, you can stay at a hotel, crash pad or even get an apartment with a roommate in the city in which you are based.

See Comply365 -> My Publications -> 55-Base Information Packets for hotels in each base with crew rates.

CrashPad411 for crash pads in your base. www.crashpad411.com.

  • Will Spirit Airlines Pay For Commuting?

No. Spirit Airlines WILL NOT pay for any costs associated with commuting except for parking.

If a Flight Attendant does not require a parking decal at his, her, or their base, the company will, upon request, reimburse the Flight Attendant for parking at an alternate location up to the amount which would have been paid at base. Ref. CBA (4.C.2)

  • Can I Live Anywhere as a Flight Attendant?

Yes. Flight Attendants live everywhere and anywhere, including other countries! However, keep in mind you need to have flights that can easily connect you to your base otherwise it can ben difficult and take too much effort.

Some Things That Making Commuting Difficult:

  • Destination:

Popular tourist destinations are difficult to commute in and out of.

    ex: MCO, LAS, MIA, FLL

  • Seniority:

If you are new flight attendant without much seniority, all those senior to you go ahead of you on the standby list.

  • Double Commute:

If you have to take two flights to get to work or home.

  • Other Commuters:

If there are a lot of other commuters, especially flight attendants it can be hard to get a seat, and all of the extra flight attendant jump seats may already be taken.

Did You Know?

The Company’s Commuter Policy is intended to limit non-probationary, registered Flight Attendant Commuters (“FACs”) from a dependability infraction when unable to report for assignments in base. A Flight Attendant may use the Commuter Policy protection no more than four (4) times in any rolling twelve (12) month period.

Ref. CBA (25.A)

Although you cannot register as a commuter while on probation, you can still be a commuter. You just do not get the use of a commuter clause until you are off of probation and complete the Flight Attendant Commuter Registration Form.
