Understanding Our Union Structure

As a member of AFA-CWA, it is important to understand how our union is structured. The union begins with YOU, the member! Your base is part of a Local Executive Council (LEC) and here at Spirit Airlines, we have a total of six (6) locals. Within each local are Local Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer) who are elected by YOU, the member.

Please review the infographic to get a better understanding of your local Spirit Airlines AFA-CWA and our AFA-CWA International structure. If you ever have any questions or concerns, you should start with your Local Executive Council.

Local Executive Council vs. Master Executive Council

A Local Executive Council (LEC) within a union plays a crucial leadership role at the local level, providing governance and support to union members within a specific local. The LEC works to ensure that the interests of the union members it represents are effectively addressed, and that union policies are properly implemented at the local level. They will take larger-scale issues that affect more than a handful of members to the Master Executive level to have them addressed appropriately.

The Master Executive Council (MEC) is composed by all Local Executive Councils within an airline to form the Master Executive Council (MEC). The MEC is responsible for coordinating the activities of AFA across an entire airline. Each LEC President sits on the MEC as the voting member for the members of the Local Council that they represent.

The LEC Presidents elect three officers to lead the MEC: a President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer. These MEC Officers serve a three-year term when elected. They do not carry a vote on the MEC with the exception of the MEC President, who votes only to break a tie.
